| IS HIP HOP DEAD? The method, madness and meaning of urban films: The Director of CODE BLACK speaks frankly about why he got into the urban film game at this late date. “Hip hop? Man, the way this is all developing, it’s turning out to be more than the latest blaxploitation fad,” says Lee. “It’s become a sand bag, a paralyzing sickness that has overshadowed the cultural variation of black people. Everything is “gangsta, gangsta” and it’s becoming SEVERAL THINGS AT ONCE: One, it's boring. How many damn gangstas are rappers? Good God, there's one on every corner it seems! Why would a gangster become a rapper? Why would a rapper become a gangster? The famous Hip Hop icon KRS ONE asked this question almost 20 years ago, and still we have young black men creating violent fantasies, which their young fans are believing to be absolutely true. Al Capone and John Gotti didn't play the role of "gangster", that was their REAL life. Do you really think these rappers know what "gangsterism" is? I grew up in New York around REAL life Italian mobsters. Do you know how hard my friend Sal laughs when he sees these so called "gangstas" demonstrate their wares on t.v., in videos? Paisan, it's a modern day clown show. This leads us to what else these new era "gangstas" are creating: A dangerous environment for artists to work in. Biggie, Tupac, Jam Master Jay, all highly talented geniuses of the rap game, all killed over this "gangsta" bullshit. So, what has the new "gangsta" imagery given black people? Nothing but death, dishonor and ultimately, tragedy. It now seems to be a question of life or death to be in the "rap game". Is that what people want? Is that really what black people want? Unlike like Superfly or Shaft which painted a picture of urban depression and men trying to elevate themselves by any means necessary, the current crop of “hip hop” films are pure nonsense. They try to take a 70’s mentality of us against them, combined with the irresponsible attitude of "gettin’mine at all costs". This new “blaxploitation” is not a celebration of culture; it’s a thinly veiled cultural perversion. It is false victimization, because most certainly today’s generation has more opportunity and freedom than any "underprivileged" or "minority" generation before. Victims? I think not. The new generation of rap gangsters are leeches sucking the life out of black civilization, while making big profit. Sadly, I guess the color green is more powerful than the color black. In the 70’s, James Brown and other black superstars were getting scammed by record producers. Now, gangsta rappers rule the charts. Instead of celebrating that success, they glorify or “exploit” the negativity in their music and their work. We must remember that Superfly and Shaft fought against a truly oppressive and racist system. Jim Crow is dead, racism is not as prevalent, black men can do what they want and be successful and control their future, to a much greater degree. That’s a long way from the 1960’s, but I think the lack of struggle and obstacles, the lack of positive black role models, has made it “too easy” for young black men. Too easy to just get “buck wild” and subvert the system and their own black culture. The new “hip hop” gangsters are destroying their own culture. There's a big difference here, and I am not sure younger audiences understand that. Today’s “gangsta rap” influenced cultural base is represented as members of an inner city with no heart and no soul. That's not what black people are about, and I am against that kind of garbage. I am ashamed black folk have been made to look so bad by a group of greedy, selfish, irresponsible young black men. It’s got to change, or there are going to be serious repercussions for all of us.” |
